ChatGPT Plus for Students: Price and Cheaper Options in 2026
ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month, and OpenAI does not have a permanent student price. It has run limited student promotions in the past, so it is worth checking for one — but the reliable savings for students come from cheaper tiers: ChatGPT Go at around $8, and Google's AI plans from $4.99.
Here is what each option costs a student over a year, and which one covers coursework.
AI plans a student can choose
| Plan | Per month | Per year | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Free | $0 | $0 | Occasional questions |

| ChatGPT Go | ~$8 | ~$96 | Hitting free limits often |
| Google AI Pro | $19.99 | $239.88 | Research-heavy courses |
| ChatGPT Plus | $20 | $240 | Daily heavy use |

What students actually need
Most students
ChatGPT Go or Google AI Plus. Both lift the free-tier limits that interrupt essay drafting and revision, for under $100 a year.
Research and dissertations
Plus or Google AI Pro, for deep research and longer, more reliable reasoning on multi-source work.
Light use
The free tier. If you ask a few questions a week, paying for a plan is optional.
