Netflix Extra Member Cost in 2026, and How It Works
A Netflix extra member costs $7.99 a month with ads or $9.99 a month without ads in the US. Standard allows one extra member and Premium allows two. The cheapest Netflix plan, Standard with ads, cannot add extra members at all.
Here is how the extra member slot works, what it gets, and when it is simply cheaper for that person to have their own plan.
Netflix extra member prices
| Per month | Per year | |
|---|---|---|
| Extra member with ads | $7.99 | $95.88 |
| Extra member without ads | $9.99 | $119.88 |
| Plan | Plan price | Extra member slots |
|---|---|---|
| Standard with ads | $8.99 | None |
| Standard | $19.99 | 1 |
| Premium | $26.99 | Up to 2 |

How an extra member works
Netflix accounts are meant for one household. The extra member slot is Netflix's official way to add someone who lives elsewhere: they get their own login, profile and recommendations, paid for by the main account holder.
An extra member streams on one device at a time and cannot create further profiles. The main account holder pays for the slot on top of their own plan and can remove it at any time.

When a separate plan is cheaper
Extra member makes sense
You already pay for Standard or Premium and want to add one person elsewhere without ads. $9.99 is still less than their own ad-free Standard plan at $19.99.
Separate plan makes sense
The other person is happy with ads. Their own Standard with ads plan is $8.99 — only $1 more than an ad-supported extra member slot, and fully independent.
Worth rethinking
You upgraded to Premium only for extra member slots. Premium plus one ad-free extra member is $36.98 a month — check whether two separate plans cost less.
Before you add an extra member
Check your plan first. Standard with ads cannot add one at all, so you may need to upgrade before the option appears.
Compare against their own plan. An ad-supported slot at $7.99 is barely cheaper than their own ad-supported plan at $8.99.
It is on your bill. The main account holder pays for the slot, so agree on how it is split before adding it.
